Sunday morning, April 6, 1913, Jacob Battenfield, a Civil War veteran passed away, heart failure being the cause of his death. He was born in Ohio and died at Buckley, Michigan, at age 77 years, 5 months, and 3 days. He had lived the allotted time of man and was content to die believing in the saving power of Jesus Christ and feeling he had earned a place in Heaven. At the age of 18 years he united with the Church of Christ and since then he has been a worker for almighty God. He was united in marriage to Mary A. Dawson on January 3, 1861, with whom he lived until her death seven years ago. To this union were born ten children, seven of which survive him. Mrs. Fannie Homan of Napoleon, Ohio; Mrs. Lizzie Ross of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Ella Bourne; Mrs. Susie Timmins; Mrs. Gertrude Wheeler; and Abner and John Battenfield of Fife Lake. In 1861 Mr. Battenfield enlisted in Company A-68-regulars, Ohio -Veteran Volunteer Infantry and faithfully served his country. In 1893 he moved to Kalkaska County where he lived until he was united in marriage to Mrs. Lydia Edgett of Buckley on October 10, 1912, where he has since resided. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon April 8 in the Disciples Church in Springfield. Rev. Long of Manton officiating. Interment was made in Springfield Cemetery, Kalkaska County. One by one these Old Veterans are passing away and it will be but a short time when the last one will have answered the final roll call and the representatives of the great Civil War will be no more.
