Winfield Edward Niels Hansen, 85, life-long resident of Kalkaska, passed away at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center-LTC on Monday, Jan. 31, 2011.

He was born in Kalkaska on July 28, 1925, to the late Arthur E. and Bertha R. (Ames) Hansen.

Winfield served his country proudly as a member of the United States Navy Seabees during World War II. He married the former Iris Mae Edmundson on Dec. 13, 1947, and together they raised three wonderful children.

Winfield was Kalkaska County's first building inspector, starting in 1992, and retiring from that position in 2006. He served as Rapid River Township Supervisor from May 1992 until June 2006. Winfield also served on many county and community boards over the years.

Winfield is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Iris; his loving children, Arthur W. (Valerie) Hansen, of Kalkaska, LeeAnna A. (Tom) Henke, of Kalkaska, and Renee B. (Tim) Morrison, of Kalkaska; his eight cherished grandchildren, Tabitha Speer, of Pine Hurst, N.C., Ty (Carla) Hansen, of Rapid City, Travis (Cassie) Hansen, of Comstock Park, Ira Henke, of Kalkaska, Arthur Henke, of San Francisco, Tom Henke, of Traverse City, Keith (Heather) White, of Rapid City, and Karrie (Jamie) Ball, of Kalkaska; and nine precious great-grandchildren.

Winfield was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Dorthy Darke, Jake Hansen, and A.C. Hansen.

Visitation will be held today, Feb. 2, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Wolfe-O'Neill Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, at the funeral home, with Pastor Steve Brower of New Hope Community Church officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful staff at Eden Center for the kind and compassionate care they extended to Winfield.
