Thank your for your service

Lio Bernard "Bernie" Bateman left this world on Feb 7, 2005, at the age of 86. He was born on May 9, 1918, in Eaton Rapids, the son of Donald and Bessie (Ferris) Bateman.

Bernie not only was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, but was also a WWII veteran, serving under Gen. Douglas MacArthur from 1942 to 1944. His unit was called "Hells on Wheels." He also fought in the Battle of the Buge where he was wounded and ultimately discharged - at that time only nine of the original 495 who left Norfolk survived. Bernie considered himself extremely fortunate to be able to tell that story.

Bernie worked at and retired from the State of Michigan Highway Department. During his lifetime, he lived in Kalkaska, Holt, and Perry. He was a person everyone looked up to and could count on when in need.

Bernie is survived by his wife, Janice Ehl Armstrong Bateman; sons, Bernard (Beverly) Bateman and Thomas (Cathy) Bateman; daughters, Rebecca (Thomas) Gamez, Sheila Jenks, Judith (Ralph) Chapman; step son, Terry (Mary) Armstrong; step daughters, Erica King, Liane (Nelson) Viars and Sonia (Ron) Brumley; many grandchildren; brother, Douglas Bateman; and many nephews and nieces.

Preceding Bernie in death was his first wife, Hilda Lucille (Groner) Bateman; daughters, Diane Kyte and Rita Rhoades; son in law, Bruce King; and two grandsons.

There will be no funeral per his request. A graveside service at Excelsior Township Cemetery will be held in the spring when weather permits.

Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home.
