George Stephens, 69, of Indian Lake, died at 8 pm Wed at the Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since Apr 6. Prior to coming to Schoolcraft Hospital, he had been a patient at St Luke’s Hospital, Marquette since Feb 15.

He was born Jun 21, 1900 in Cornwall, Britain and had resided in Manistique since 1903. He graduated from Manistique High School in 1918. Mr. Stephens was married to the former Gertrude Seamon Doron Feb 26, 1931 in Manistique.

He was a member of the Manistique United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge 622 of Manistique, American Legion Post 83 and he served on the Manistique City Council and Board of Supervisors for eight years, 1950-58. He was also a WWI Veteran.

Mr. Stephens was employed by the Soo Line Railway, Ann Arbor Railway and Manistique & Lake Superior Railway, for a total of 46 years. He retired as superintendent of the Manistique & Lake Superior Railway, Mar 1, 1966.

He is survived by his widow; four daughters, Mrs. Reuben (Doris) Johnson of Livonia, Mrs. William (Marla) Bauman of Manistique, Mrs. Richard (Lois) Makinen of Rockville, MD, and Mrs. Francis (Virginia) Shaffer of Detroit; one brother, Sidney of Kanai, AK; two sisters, Mrs. Henry (Irene) Knowski of Cleveland, OH and Mrs. Ray (Fern) Martin of Hallendale, FL, 14 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home after 4pm Friday and funeral services will be held Sat at 2pm with the Rev Ted Doane officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery. Elks Memorial services will be conducted at 8pm, Fri at the funeral home.
