Clinton E. Cross, 69, of Manistee, died Mon, May 26, 1997, at his home. He was born Sept 11, 1927, in Moran to Guy R. and Irene (Nash) Cross. 

Mr. Cross served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He married Darling (Trish) Schultz on Sep 18, 1982, in Kalkaska. He attended Excelsior School in Kalkaska and college in Alpena for law enforcement training; Augburgs, Germany, and Tulsa, OK for pipeline inspection engineering work. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and camper. 

He had been employed as a crane operator for Joe Brown and Son Company in Grand Rapids. Later he was a sheriff deputy for Kalkaska County Sheriff Department and then Chief of Police for the Kalkaska Police Department. Before his retirement in 1995, Mr. Cross was a pipeline inspector for Williams Brothers Engineering Company. 

He was a life member of VFW Post 9023 of Brimley, member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 1128 of Manistee and a member of the St. Joseph Civic Club. 

Surviving are his wife, daughters Judy (Phil) Brick of Kalkaska and Anna (Scott) Vandeaguzhte of Zeeland; step daughter Paula (Mike) Atkins of Wewahitchka, FL; sons Eugene (Gene) Cross of Houston, TX, Lynn (Nancy) Cross and Mike Cross of Kalkaska; sisters Virginia Watson of Williamsburg and Ardis Watson of Kalkaska; brothers Gerald Cross of Kalkaska and Larry (Donna) Cross of San Diego, CA; 17 grandchildren, five great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his son William Cross, sisters Merle Huff and Eileen Rattery, and brothers Keith, Kenny, and Verle Cross. 

Funeral services were held May 30 at Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. Rev. James Mosse officiated. 

The Manistee Moose Lodge 1128 conducted memorial services followed by Military Honors by members of the Manistee VFW Walsh Post 4499. Cremation took place on May 31.
