Wilbur E. Snyder Sr., 69, of Traverse City, died Tue evening at the Michigan Veterans’ Facility in Grand Rapids following a lengthy illness.

He was a veteran of WWII and served in the European theater. He attained the rank of Corporal T-5, and was awarded ribbons with two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medals, and the Victory Medal.

Following military discharge he returned to Fife Lake, where he was a dairy farmer for 10 years.

In 1958 he moved to Traverse City where he worked as an attendant nurse at the Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital for 30 years. He drove a school bus for the Traverse City Public Schools. He belonged to St. Francis Catholic Church and Cherryland VFW Post No. 2780.

The son of Clyde and Martha (Aldridge) Snyder, he was born March 6, 1920, in Fife Lake, and married Feb. 25, 1941, in Kalkaska, to Dorothy Timmins who survives. 

Also surviving are three sons, Richard L. Snyder of Flint, and William D. and Michael W. Snyder, both of Traverse City; two daughters, Mrs. Cecil (Bonnie) Kinder and Mrs. David (Connie) Kirsch, both of Traverse City; 11 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Wilbur E. Snyder Jr in 1977; two brothers, Stanley and Luther Snyder; and three sisters, Gladys Snyder, Thelma Hanna and Vernice Peterson. 

Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Francis Catholic Church. the Revs.  Ron Gronowski and Edwin J. Frederick officiated. Burial was in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.

Arrangements were made by the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
