Vercil E. Johnson, 85, of Manistee Lake, Kalkaska County, died on Sat, Dec 19, 1992 at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. 

Mr. Johnson was self-employed as a building contractor, and he will be remembered for many of his buildings. Some of them are the Antrim County Road Commission building in Mancelona, the former Mancelona Elementary School, Wayne Wire in Kalkaska, many custom homes in the Torch Lake and Clam Lake area, and churches in Hillsdale, Jackson, and Detroit. 

He enjoyed building fieldstone and splitstone fireplaces, fishing, and hunting. He was a member of the Mancelona Missionary Church. He had lived in East Jordan, Green River, Mancelona, and Manistee Lake. 

On Jul 27, 1907 in East Jordan, he was born to Charles and Eliza (Wilson) Johnson. 

On Sep 9, 1927, he was married to Margaret Lather, and she died in 1968. 

On Apr 11, 1972 in Toledo, he was married to Edith Cummings, and she survives. 

Also surviving is one daughter, Glenda McIntire of Kalkaska; three step sons, Mervin and his wife, Doris Newcomb, Alton and his wife Sandra Newcomb, James and his wife Cherry Moore all of Spring Arbor; one step daughter, Martha and her husband Ezra Locklear of Maxton, NC; four grandchildren, nine step grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; one brother Wilfred and his wife Wilma Johnson of Kalkaska; sister in law, Alouise Larson of Mancelona; brothers in law, Ray Slocum and Ted Engel; and many nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his first wife, Margaret, he was preceded in death by his brother, Clifford Larson; sisters Octavia Turbin, Virginia Slocum, Thelma Engel, and Reatha Lather; one granddaughter, Debra Dawn McIntire; and brother in law, Gordon Lather. 

Funeral services were held on Mon, Dec 21, at the Mancelona Missionary Church with Rev. Curt Alexander officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Mancelona. 

Memorials may be directed to the Mancelona Missionary Church. 

Funeral arrangements were handled by the Paullin Funeral Home, Mancelona.
