Mrs. Mary L. Straksis, 79, of Mancelona, died Mon, Aug 1, 1994, at her residence. Mrs. Straksis moved to Kalkaska County in 1928 from Findlay, OH. She was a graduate of Central Michigan University, and taught in several area schools including the Forest Area School. She retired in 1979. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, and had been active in 4-H programs for many years. Her hobbies included reading and sewing.
Mrs. Straksis was born in Hancock County, OH on Oct 13, 1914, to James and Mattie Werts Herring. On Jan 27, 1940, in Mancelona, she was married to Justin Straksis who survives.
Besides her husband, she is survived by one son, Justin Straksis of Kalkaska; two daughters, Mrs. Bill (Linda) George of Kalkaska and Mrs. Roger (Sharon) Phaneuf of Gaylord; three step sisters, Wilma McCafferty of Pontiac, Lucille Milbocker of Detroit, and Alta Derby of Kalkaska; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
One step brother, Ernest Corey, preceded her in death.
