Jay O’Neal Mathews, of Grayling, lost his battle with cancer on Sun, Jun 15, 2014. He was born on Jun 7, 1948 to Joye (Wells) Matthews in Grayling, MI. He attended school in both Roscommon and Grayling. Jay retired from Weyerhauser Company and owned J & G Enterprises. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1967 until 1971. Jay loved riding his Harley, hunting, canoeing, and spending tiem with his twin grandsons. Jay is survived by his daughters: LeAnna (Andy) Sheipe and Marcy Mathews all of Augusta, MI; twin grandsons, Michael and Stanton Sheipe; granddaughter Hannah Sheipe; brother, Mike (Pam) Mathews of Six Lakes, MI; sister, Mary Mathews Raymond of Portage, MI; nephews, Neal (Mandy) Raymond of Omaha, NB and niece JoAnna (Maurice Hudson of Portage, MI. He was preceded in death by his mother and three siblings. Memorial Services to celebrate Jay’s life will be announced at a later date. The family is being served by Shaw Funeral Home, Battle Creek.
