Genevieve M. Groger, retired nurse at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North

Genevieve M. Groger had a caring touch.

She worked as a registered nurse in the newborn/premature baby unit at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.

“All those babies were her babies,” said her daughter, Sharon A. Barhorst.

Mrs. Groger, of Covington, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. She was 93.

Her caring touch also meant a difference in the life of a daughter, Marsha, as well. The daughter had cerebral palsy and died at age 10.

“Mom took care of her,” said Barhorst. “She gave up her life for Marsha. She would’ve had to gone to a home if mom wasn’t a nurse.”

Grandchildren also received their her tender care.

“She was there for all the grandchildren,” said Barhorst. “She gave all the grandchildren their first baths at the hospital.”

Mrs. Groger and her husband Harold spent the winters in Moore Heaven, Fla. While there, she participated until the age of 72 in a senior dance group called the Ding-a-Lings.

Her husband was a fiddler, and she traveled with him to contests and performances.

“They went to Greensburg, Ind. All different places. They were active,” said Barhorst.

Mrs. Groger’s husband, Harold Groger, died in 2002. They were married for 61 years.

“She went to all the things the kids had,” said Barhorst.

“She never had a bad word to say about anyone,” said Barhorst. “She was an angel then, and an angel now.”

Mrs. Groger also was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post no. 1434.

Additional survivors include a daughter, Nancy H. Hill; sisters, Elizabeth Kirchner and Clara Wheatley; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
