Ernest William Morgan was born at Sheridan, July 28, 1881, and died Friday, Nov. 1, 1940, at the Veterans Hospital, Dearborn, at the age of 59 years, 3 months and 4 days.
At the age of twelve Mr. Morgan came to Kalkaska County and settled in Springfield township, where the family kept a general store at Springfield Station.
From here he enlisted in Feb 1903 in the 28th Battery of The United States Artillery. He served four years, first as a private and later as a corporal, having seen active service in the Philippine Islands. In 1908, he married Mable Webber of Fife Lake.
Three children of this union survive, namely, Mrs. Helen Bessemet of Onaway, Miss Ruth Morgan of Grand Rapids, and a son Robert of Fife Lake. Mrs. Mable Morgan died during the flue epidemic in 1918.
In Nov. 1920 he married Mrs. Della Haskins, who survives. He is also survived by nine step children.
Mr. Morgan had been in failing health for some time. He was a patient in the Veteran's hospital since June.
Surviving besides the widow and children are, one brother, Cash Morgan of Washington state; one sister, Mrs. Nina Hale of Pontiac four half brothers and three half sisters.
Mr. Morgan followed the carpenters trade and built many cottages around Fife Lake. He was a dependable worker, industrious and a good friend and neighbor, always willing to help anyone in need.
Burial services were held in the Fife Lake church, Rev. Tennant assisted by Rev. Ellis, of South Boardman, officiated. Music was furnished by Mrs. Mildred Huff at the organ. Mrs. Baker sang the following songs: "The Bright Forever", and "God's Way is Best".
Interment was in Clark cemetery.
