Mrs. Bertha Ouderkirk, of Fife Lake, received a message from the War Dept. this week stating that her son, Staff Sergeant Devere Wilson Dine, had been killed in action in Belgium, Dec. 23, 1944. 

Devere Wilson Dine was born in Springfield Township, Oct. 16, 1920. He was the son of Amos and Bertha Dine. He grew to manhood in Fife Lake and graduated from Fife Lake High School in 1939. He was for a time in CCC camps in Wisconsin and in Isle Royal. 

Devere was inducted into the army on Nov. 1942, and received his training at Ft. Benning, Ga., and Camp Gordon, Ga., going overseas about Sept 1, 1944, where he soldiered in France, Belgium, and Germany. He was in General Patton's third army. 

Surviving besides the mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Ouderkirk, are three brothers, Pfc. George Edward Dine in Scotland, Pfc. Norval Dine in the hospital in England and Wilbur Dine at home; two sisters, Louise and Rosemary Ouderkirk, at home. He also leaves a large number of other relatives and friends. His father died in Nov. 1929. 

While in the CCC camp he studied public speaking and planned then to enter the ministry. He was a member of the Springfield Church of Christ.
