William A Summerfield, 83, of Mancelona, died on Mon, Mar 11, 2002, at the Cedar Court AFC in Kalkaska. 

William was born Oct 13, 1918, in Flint, the son of William and Catherine "Millie" (White) Summerfield. He served in the US Army during WWII in New Guinea and the Philippines, where he received numerous medals. On Mar 7, 1959, in West Branch, he married Alice Norma Cooper. They made their home in Goodrich and then moved to Lakes of the North in 1971. She preceded him in death on Jul 3, 1995.

William had worked for General Motors for over 30 years and retired in 1972. He enjoyed watching sports, playing pool, bowling and golfing. Most of all, he enjoyed his grandchildren. 

He is survived by daughter Jana (Brad) Lanning of Mancelona; stepson, Jay Herman of Caro; stepdaughter Randa (Duane) Colby of Kinde; seven grandchildren; brothers Jack Summerfield of Kalkaska, Donald Summerfield of Ann Arbor, Doug (Barb) Summerfield of Owosso, Robert (Mary) Summerfield of Flint, and Richard (Esther) Summerfield of Flint; sisters, Virginia Pascoe of Flint and Catherine (Clayton) Paine of OR; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother James and sister Shirley. 

Funeral services were held Mar 15 at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc in Mancelona. Rev Steve Summerfield of the Kingsley Baptist Church officiated. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery in Mancelona. Memorials may be given to the Kalkaska County Senior Center.
