Russell J Winter, 88, of Kalkaska, died Sun, Jan 14, 2001, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. 

He was born in Flint on Mar 20, 1912, the son of John Herbert and Stella (Lyle) Winter. On Apr 3, 1942, in Wheaton, IL, he was united in marriage with Mina Solem, who survives. 

Mr. Winter resided in Flint until 1946, when he moved to Kalkaska. He formerly owned the Kalkaska Dry Cleaners and later operated Winter's Marathon Service until his retirement in 1977. An avid sports fan, he was active in many civic projects and served as village assessor for more than 40 years. He was a life member of Traverse City Lodge 102 F & AM, East Bay Lodge 264 F & AM, Knights of Templar 41, the Saladin Temple, and the Northwest Michigan Shrine Club. 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Ronald (Barbara) Winter of Kalamazoo, and Michael (Connie Dupuie) Winter of Kalkaska; brother J Dean Winter of Grand Rapids; grandchildren Stacy, Ross, Kristina, Katherine, and James Winter. 

A sister, Ethel, preceded him in death. 

Funeral services were Jan 16 at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska; Rev Ted Turanski officiated. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Kalkaska. 

A Masonic memorial service was held Jan 15. 

Memorial gifts may be directed to the Northwest Michigan Shrine Club Crippled Children's Fund.
