Raymond Beer, 76, Berne, well known retired Berne postal employee and civic leader died suddenly of a heart attack at home at 8:30 am today. He was a lifelong Adams County resident. He was born in Adams County on Jun 4, 1914 to Christian C. and Sarah Ellenberger Beer and married Etta M. Anspaugh on Mar 21, 1948. She survives.

He worked for the US Postal Service for 47 years as a clerk, rural mail carrier, and assistant postmaster at the Berne Post Office. He was a Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America for 25 years, served as District Commissioner of the Boy Scouts, and was awarded the Silver Beaver award for his many years of service to scouting. He was a member and former elder of Cross United Church of Christ, Berne, and a member of the church’s building committee and choir. He was also on the board of directors at Swiss Village, Berne.

Other survivors are a son, Larry W. Beer, Bedford, VA; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Sherry) Caldwell, Route 2, DeLand, FL; a brother, Elmer C. Beer, Berne; two sisters, Mrs. Henry (Rosella) Nussbaum, Route 1, Berne, and Edna Schindler, Berne; and three grandchildren. Deceased are four brothers, Harvey, Ermin, Merlin, and Jesse Beer, and six sisters, Lovina Pickford, Rufina Roth, Della Beer, Caroline Sallot, Lillie Rich, and Dora Spichiger.

Funeral services are at 10:30am Thu in Cross United Church of Christ, Dr. William A. Huenemann officiating. Burial will be in MRE Cemetery. Visiting hours at Yager-Kirchofer Funeral Home are 2 to 9pm Wed. There is visitation at the church from 9 to 10:30 am Thu. Preferred memborials are to the Ch St’s Assistant Fund or Swiss Village.
