Merlin "Mutt" Hulbert, 80, of Fife Lake, formerly of Grand Rapids, passed away on Sep 27, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. 

He was born Jan 4, 1923, in Manton the son of Orbie and Myrtle (Wood) Hulbert. 

Mutt was a veteran who served in the US Army Air Corp from Apr 1942 to Nov 1945. 

He married Achsa E Wall on Jul 26, 1947, in Grand Rapids. Mutt was a design engineer. He and Achsa moved from Grand Rapids in 1989 to Fife Lake. 

Mutt enjoyed bonding with his children and grandchildren, had a unique talent in woodworking and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling. He was a member of the Lions Club in Ada. 

Mutt is survived by his wife, Achsa, of 56 years; children, Joyce M (Ruben) Barreto of Grandville, John W. Hulbert of Fife Lake, James L Hulbert of Glendale, AZ, and Jack A (Susan) Hulbert of Shelbyville; eight grandchildren; one great grandson; and brother, Lyle (Nellie) Hulbert of Crawfordsville, IN. 

Mutt was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Willard; and sisters, Ethel and Leila; and his baby sister, Frances. 

A memorial service will be on Thu, Oct 2 at 2 pm at the Cascade Christian Chapel with the Rev. Raymond Gaylord officiating. 

Visitation will be at 1 pm until the time of service. 

Memorials may be given in behalf of Mutt to the American Cancer Society, 525 W. 14th St, Ste 5, Traverse City, MI 49684, or the Kalkaska Commission on Aging, 303 S. Coral St, Kalkaska, MI 49646.
