BIRTH: 07 Jan 1939 Empire, Leelanau, Michigan

DEATH: 27 Dec 2002 Alpena, Alpena, Michigan

Margaret Rose (Midge) Schultz, 63, of 2381 Hobbs Dr, Alpena, passed away Fri, Dec 27, 2002 at her residence.

Born in Empire, Michigan on Jan 7, 1939 to Harold and Marcella Basch, she grew up on a small farm in Empire and attended school there. In 1955, she was chosen "Miss Empire" and represented her town in the National Cherry Festival Pageant. After high school graduation, she attended Northwestern Michigan Community College School of Nursing and moved to Alpena in 1957, at age 18, as a nursing student.

On Feb 1, 1958, she married Bernard Schultz of Alpena. They would have celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary in 2003. Midge worked in the surgical department at Alpena General Hospital for several years as a scrub nurse. She helped organize and was the charter President of Local 206. After leaving the hospital she was hired as the Welcome Wagon Hostess. This job gave her the privilege and opportunity to welcome and introduce hundreds of families to the Alpena area. She also worked in retail and advertising sales for several years.

In 1976, she began work with Farm Bureau Insurance as an agent. After several years, she opened her own agency and was a top producer for the company for 25 years until her retirement in 2001. Her association with Farm Bureau allowed for a close relationship with the members of the Huron County Farm Bureau group. Upon retirement Midge and Bernie purchased a "winter nest" in Port Richey, Florida.

After her diagnosis and recovery from breast cancer in 1980, Midge spent many hours counseling, encouraging and comforting other local women with breast cancer.

Midge was a charter Vice-President of Tri-County Zonta and a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Midge loved camping. Each summer they spent several weeks and most weekends at various campgrounds in Northern Michigan.

She is survived by her husband Bernard; two daughters, Julie Dietz and husband Bruce of Alpena, and Cindy Glennie and husband Donald of Holland, MI; a son, Robert and wife LeAnn of Alpena; her sister, Marie Chambers of Coldwater, MI; four nieces and a nephews; and her 'pride and joy' six grandchildren, Justin and Kayla Dietz, Nathan and Brandon Glennie, and Nicholas and Hanna Rose Schultz- her namesake.

Mrs. Schultz is at the Bannun Funeral Home, where friends may call on Sat from 6 to 8 pm and Sun 2 to 8 pm. Visitation will continue Mon at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church from 10 am until the time of the funeral at 11 am with Rev. Kenneth Stachnix officiating.
