VanSkyhawk, Jesse C

In Memory of
Jesse C VanSkyhawk

BIRTH: 05 Aug 1871 Bremen, Marshall, Indiana

DEATH: 25 Oct 1948 Mentone, Marshall, Indiana

Jesse C. VanSkyhawk, a lifelong resident of Bremen, was instantly killed Sat evening at about 6:30 when he was run over by a car driven by Ernest Weber at the corner of North Center and Second Streets, north of the wallpaper factory.

Evidence brought out in an inquest by Coroner C.G. Mackey indicated that VanSkyhawk had fallen in the street near the west curb at the corner. Two cars, one coming from the east out of Second Street and the other traveling north in Center street, had stopped when the drivers saw him. Weber, coming from the north in Center street, pulled to the side of the street to avoid the stopped cars. He told the coroner that he did not see anybody in the street, but he remembered feeling a bump which he supposed was something on the pavement. He went on home without knowing he had struck VanSkyhawk, but returned to the scene of the accident immediately when told what had happened. He was exonerated of any blame for the accident by the coroner.

It is believed the wheel of Weber’s car passed over VanSkyhawk’s head. The coroner said death was due to a fractured skull.

Mr. VanSkyhawk was the son of Isaac and Lydia (Lanning) VanSkyhawk and was born in Bremen Aug 5, 1870. Survivors are a son, Merle VanSkyhawk, South Bend, and two daughters, Mrs. Wilbur Dunnuck of South Bend and Mrs. Edward Lovejoy of Elkhart.

Funeral services were held in the Huff Funeral Home Tue afternoon, Rev. D.H. Pellett of Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church officiating. Burial was in the Bremen Cemetery.
