George “Pete” Carroll, Jr., 89, of 233 North Fifth Street, Manistique, Michigan died August 20, 2011 at the Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital in Manistique.

He was born November 9, 1921 in Oxford, Michigan the son of George and Mildred (Covey) Carroll and graduated from Oxford High School.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and also during the Korean Conflict.

On November 1, 1945 he married Francis M. Shagena in Lake Orion, Michigan. They moved to the Manistique area in 1960 from Ortonville, Michigan. Francis preceded him in death on September 13, 1999.

Pete retired from General Motors and was a member of the United Auto Workers Union. He and his wife owned and operated the Knotty Pine Café in Thompson.

He loved tinkering with anything mechanical and could fix just about anything. He also enjoyed rabbit hunting, attending garage sales and flea markets and meeting his friends at Hardee’s for coffee.

Pete is survived by his son, George (Valerie) Carroll, III, of Manistique; daughters: Ruth Ann (Ray) Hutchings of Midway, GA, Francine Bailey of Newberry, Mildred Jager of Thompson and Charlene (Richard) Nalette of Newberry; 17 grandchildren; 47 great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren; brother Henry (Susan) Carroll of Grayling, MI; sister Cleo Sheldon of Grayling, MI and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Cherie Shemwell; great grandson, George Edward Carroll, V; three brothers and four sisters.

Memorial services will be held at 2:30 pm on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at the VFW Hall in Manistique with Pastor Joseph Crowder officiating. A luncheon will follow at the hall. Burial will be in the Thompson Township Cemetery at Thompson, Michigan.
