Lanning, Everett Murl

In Memory of
Everett Murl Lanning

BIRTH: 30 May 1927 Homer, Blackford, Indiana

DEATH: 24 Feb 1946 Hartford City, Blackford, Indiana

Hartford City, IN, Feb 25

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday morning at the Baxter and Markin chapel for Everett Murl (Bud) Lanning, 18 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Lanning, 425 E. Washington St, this city, who ended his own life Sunday morning about 11:15 o’clock by shooting himself in the right chest with a .22-calibre rifle. Despondency over the fact that he was compelled to return to an army camp at Kilmer, NJ after the expiration of a re-enlistment furlough of 20 days was cited as the cause of his rash act. He had grieved over his separation from an army friend, who had been transferred to Kansas. Going into a bedroom, he apparently leaned over the rifle. His heavy clothing muffled the sound of the shot, and not until he fell mortally wounded did his parents know of the tragedy. He died within a few minutes after the shooting. The youth was born in this city, attended the Millgrove School southeast of here and later attended the Chester Center High School for one year. He was drafted Jul 17, 1945, and appeared to enjoy army life. He re-enlisted and was granted a 30 day furlough. Saturday, he grieved over being compelled to return to camp since his army companion had been transferred and had remarked that he would not return to camp. Surviving other than his parents, are a sister, Mrs. Marion Yount, of this city.
