Edith Phyllis (Hendricks) Gosling

DEATH: 20 Mar 2007

Edith Phyllis Hendricks Gosling, 90, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Mar 20, 2007. Phyllis was born in Traverse City, MI on Jul 7, 1916. She was the eldest of the five children born to Dr. Henning V. and Jennie B Hendricks. In 1927, the family moved to Kalkaska where Dr. Hendricks set up a medical practice. Phyllis graduated from Kalkaska High School in 1933, valedictorian of her class. She attended New Briton Connecticut Teachers College for two years. 

Phyllis married Harry P Gosling on Oct 27, 1935, at the People's Church in Kalkaska. Harry preceded her in death in 1989. Phyllis was also preceded in death by her parents; brother, Dwight Hendricks; sister, Edna Shoner; and daughter in law, Martha Gosling. 

Surviving  her are six children: Art and Betty Gosling of Cedar, MI; Susan and Dale Horrom of Rudyard, MI; Philip and Nancy Gosling of Goff, KS; Burton and Judi Gosling of Spokane, WA; Dr. Charles Gosling of Grayling, MI; Fredrik & Kathy Gosling of Mayfield, MI. She was also the proud grandmother of 25 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren. 

Surviving siblings are Dr. Charles Hendricks of Chapel Hill, NC; Burton and Dawn Hendricks of Hershey, PA; and sister in law, Elizabeth Hendricks of Hiram, OH. 

Besides being a busy housewife and mother, Phyllis took a very active part in her church and community. She was a member of the People's Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher, youth group leader, pianist, organist, choir member, and choir director. When her children were in school, she was active in the PTA and was president of that organization at one time. Phyllis was a founding member of the Academia Club of Kalkaska and held many offices in the Kalkaska Republican Party. 

She helped with the financial support of her family by holding several positions in Kalkaska over the years, including grocery clerk, law secretary, bookkeeper for Schreur Motors, and finally, office manager of Voice Motors. In addition to these jobs, she helped her husband Harry at Gosling's Market. 

Phyllis enjoyed traveling and visited family in various parts of the country. She and Harry traveled to Guam when Sue's family resided there. She loved music, reading, doing crossword puzzles, looking for wildflowers, and photography. 

Phyllis was a very special lady, helpful, loving and caring to everyone. There was always room for one more at her table and in her home. She was greatly loved by many. 

The few years of her life were spent at Maple Valley Nursing Home, where she was lovingly cared for by all the staff. 

Visitation was Thu, Mar 22, at Wolfe-O'Neill Funeral Home in Kalkaska and at the People's Church in Kalkaska. Services were held Fri at the People's Church with Pastor Roger Numerich officiating.
