Chester A. Briggs, age 102, of Traverse City, formerly of Canada Creek Ranch, died at home on Wed, Jun 18, 2014. The son of Percy and Blanche (Westover) Briggs, Chester was born in Rose City on September 27, 1911.

A veteran of the US Navy, Chester served our country during WWII.

After returning from the service he worked diligently to open a sporting goods business, starting with constructing the building for the store in Keego Harbor. He operated Briggs Sporting Goods for nearly 30 years and was an expert when it came to fishing knowledge and gunsmithing.

In 1969 Chester retired and moved to Canada Creek Ranch near Atlanta. Retirement in Northern Michigan gave Chester the opportunity to pursue his passions of hunting, fishing and shooting skeet and trap. He continued until the age of 98 when he shot his first elk.

He was very active in the Canada Creek Ranch Association, joining various committees, working as a security guard and even serving as ranch manager for a short time.

Chester was known for growing beautiful gladiolas and was very generous, sharing bouquets with friends and neighbors at the ranch.

Chester was a member of the Traverse City Elks Lodge and attended church in Onaway at the United Methodist Church.

Surviving Chester are his three sons, David (Carol) Briggs Sr. of Traverse City, Dan (Judy) Briggs, of Harpswell, ME, and Jim (Judy) Briggs, NC; as well as 10 grandchildren; and many great great grandchildren.
