DEATH: 29 Mar 1989 Lincoln Park, Wayne, Michigan

Bettye Haskin, a former runner-up for Downriver Mother of the Year, died of cancer Wednesday, March 29, 1989, in Outer Drive Hospital. She was 60 years old.

A Lincoln Park resident for 39 years, Mrs. Haskin was named second runner-up in the 1985 contest sponsored by The Mellus Newspapers, which eventually merged with The News-Herald Newspapers. 

Mrs. Haskin was active in the Dix United Methodist Church and had done volunteered as a hospice home care worker several years ago through Metro Home Health Care Services, according to her son, William Jay Haskin. 

A registered medical assistant, she also served on the Lincoln Park Recreation Commission at one time and got involved in city youth activities, her son said. 

A widow, Mrs. Haskin also is survived by her sons, John and Gary; daughters, Kristy Wietholter, Patricia Harkiewicz, and Mary Jean; brother, Owen Hogue; sister, Dorothy Peterson; and eight grandchildren. 

Services here held April 2 at the Nixon-Weise Funeral Home in Lincoln Park. Interment was in Clark Cemetery in Fife Lake. 

Mrs. Haskin received hospice home care before her death, according to Sue Andres of the Arbor Hospice, and the family has requested memorial donations be made to the Arbor Hospice of Personalized Nursing Service, 2010 Hogback Road, Suite 4A, Ann Arbor, MI 48105.
