Arley K. Atkinson, 80, of Kalkaska died Friday, Oct. 13, 1989 at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center, following an extended illness.
Mr. Atkinson had lived in Detroit from 1941 until 1969. Following his retirement from Goddard and Goddard Industrial Cutting Tools in Detroit, he moved to Blue Lake Township, Kalkaska County.
He enjoyed snowmobiling, woodcutting, and hunting and fishing. At the age of 79 he made a 700 mile snowmobile trip through the Upper Peninsula. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose of Mancelona 2254.
Nov. 19, 1908 in Sylvania, IN he was born to Grant and Effie (Jones) Atkinson. He was married to Melvena Straight Nov. 15, 1932 in Mancelona and she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Arley R. Atkinson of Wayland and Daniel Atkinson of Kalkaska; four grandchildren, Susan, Jeffery, Mark, and Glen Atkinson; one great granddaughter, Heather Atkinson; three brothers, William of Lenexa, KS, Frank of Clearwater, FL and Charles of St. Clair Shores; and one sister, Idora Holley of Walloon Lake.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Aaron, Penny, Warren, and Cephas, and two sisters, Isabelle and Nellie.
Funeral services were held Monday, Oct 16, at the Paullin Funeral Home in Mancelona with Rev. Timothy Graham officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Mancelona.
A memorial Moose service was held on Sunday evening, Oct. 15 at the Paullin Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Mancelona United Methodist Church.
