Angelo R. "Gene" Ascione, Sr., 66, a Kalkaska businessman, died Thursday, July 5, 1990, at Munson Medical Center.
Mr. Ascione owned and operated Gene's Supermarket in Detroit for 25 years, prior to moving to Kalkaska in 1970. At the time of his death he owned Northland Food and Family Center in Kalkaska. Mr. Ascione served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WW2, and was among the first troops to land in Okinawa. During 1945 and 1946, he operated a nightclub for U.S. servicemen in China. He enjoyed his work, family, and friends.
Mr. Ascione was born in Detroit on October 13, 1923, to Domenic and Anna Matz Ascione. On August 31, 1946, in Detroit, he was married to Eva Capaldi who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Ronald Gene Ascione of Acme, and Nick Ascione of Kalkaska; three daughters, Carol Jeanne Buskirk of Bear Lake, Janet LaCroix of Venice, Florida, and Denise Kessner of Williamsburg; one brother, Edward Ascione of Kalkaska; one sister, Gloria Morrone of Kalkaska; and 15 grandchildren.
One brother, Arthur, and two sisters, Elaine Gallucci and Therese DiFonzo, preceded him in death.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, July 9, 1990, at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Kalkaska. Father Patrick J. Barrett officiated. Burial was in St. Mary of the Woods Cemetery at Barker Creek.
The Rosary was recited Sunday at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
